Round and modular locker room shower stall enclosures were developed to meet the many changes in locker room designs. Lockers in the past always had wall showers. They were essentially overhead faucets operated by dial handles, installed in a separate shower room connected to the main locker room.
There were a number of issues that arose from this particular shower room design. The first issue was the consumption of floor space. To accommodate the number of users needing to shower, the shower room was almost as large as the locker area.
There was no privacy in these facilities, either. The fixtures were simply lined up in a row on either wall, with no stalls or partitions between individual spaces. Drains were normally located toward the center of a slightly sloped floor that became slippery with soapy water. Flow controls were nonexistent in those days, so shower heads wasted a great deal of water.
Round and modular locker room showers then came along and made it possible for architects to design an entirely new type of locker room. Rather than having a separate room devoted to showering, shower facilities could be installed in the same general area as the lockers and the benches.
Additionally, partitions could then be added between shower heads that would create private spaces for individual users. Drains could be built in such a way as to avoid creating a slip hazard often seen in previous floor designs. Flow controls were also added to plumbing that conserved water usage without sacrificing user functionality or convenience.
Round and modular locker room showers are actually a modified type of column shower. They offer all of the privacy features that personal showers offer. Each section is divided from the other by a partition. Additionally, there is a curtain that completely seals off the stall from the outside.
Semi-circular models can service up to 3 users at a time. Circular models can service up to 6. Column modesty units feature a linear design with back to back rectangular stalls formed by partitions and privacy curtains.
Round and modular locker room shower systems can be custom fitted to very limited spaces. Large numbers of users can still be accommodated in less space, making it possible for building designers to in turn design more space efficient locker areas without compromising the usability of the facility.
This has proven to be especially beneficial to smaller buildings that require changing areas, secure storage, and shower facilities. With little floor space to devote to a large, traditional locker area, these facilities can make more use of the area they have and provide users with a higher level of quality than older facilities could ever provide.
Just a few examples of facilities that find round and modular locker room showers particularly valuable include small neighborhood gyms, summer camps, public pools, small schools, police stations, fire stations, and industrial plants where employees must shower and change before leaving the plant.
Of course very large facilities can also benefit from these systems because even more users can be accommodated with more efficient facilities installed in high volume, heavy traffic areas.
