If your facility has a small restroom, XPB Locker Supply can help you save space and get the most out of your square footage. The key to doing this is to compare the total amount of available space to the amount of space users actually need to comfortably move within the room. The difference between these two numbers allows us to then customize stalls to adapt to the width of the restroom. ADA stalls whose measurements cannot be adapted can be positioned at the end of the restroom so that stall depth extends into the length of the room without consuming width in narrow space.
Before we actually begin the design process, however, we encourage our clients to take a second set of measurements so we will know exactly what we are working with. Measuring a new construction is easy. Organizations only have to measure the width and length of the room, and the distance between the floor and ceiling. Most small restrooms we furnish, however, are reconstructions where stalls, lavatories, and accessories already exist. Unless the organization plans to replace everything in the restroom, additional measurements between fixtures will probably be needed.
Our staff will help guide you through this process if you encounter any difficulty. We only need a copy of your blueprint to walk you through the process and begin the redesign process.
Typically, we find the biggest challenges in small restrooms to be insufficient space for standard stalls and ADA stalls to fit side by side. Normally the vanity area takes up a large enough space that there simply is not enough room to fit all the stalls. In men’s restrooms, even more space is consumed by urinals between the lavatories and stalls. If the room is not long enough to house all these fixtures in series, what do you do?
To save space in a situation such as this, we may redesign the restroom with the ADA stall at the very end of the room. The door to the stall would face the entrance to the restroom, and standard stalls could then be positioned along the walls. Urinals can be placed on either side of the standard stalls with the appropriate screens.
Some small restrooms are also very narrow and stall depths extend so far out from the wall that they consume too much of the width of the room. This leaves too little room between the stall door and the opposing wall. Some quarters are so cramped that there isn’t even enough room to mount an out swinging door on the stall.
To save space in these areas, we can cut back partition width up to 48 inches in order to create a stall that extends less distance toward the center of the room. The amount of customization varies per job, and ADA stalls will need to remain more or less constant to comply with code. Doors may also need to be customized to swing outward rather than inward so there will be more room for accessories within the stalls.
Fixtures, partitions, andaccessories for small restrooms are much easier to select and install once these space management challenges are overcome in the planning phase. XPB Locker will recommend options that fit both the design and the client’s budget. For some projects, we will also perform a turnkey installation.
