Non-elevated sports bleachers allow a variety of smaller athletic organizations to accommodate crowds of varying sizes. Little league baseball, municipal soccer leagues, and various non-professional, local football leagues can outfit their spectator areas with safe, accessible, and cost-effective seating. Both indoor and outdoor facilities can be equipped with custom stands that will provide spectators with comfort, mobility, and excellent line of site.
Organizations do not have to build grandstands with aisles, stairs, or elevated walking areas. Building codes allow non-elevated seating stands to be constructed without aisles provided steps measure a minimum 6 inches rise between the rows of seats. 3 and 4 row bleachers can be installed side by side to accommodate smaller crowds. Larger 4 row, 5 row, 8 row, and 10 row bleachers can also be installed without aisles, but building codes do require them to be installed with safety rails along the side. XPB Locker includes safety railing with every set of sports bleachers measuring 5 rows or more.
While the number of rows varies as noted above, the basic design of all non-elevated bleachers is essentially the same. Rather than having a separate deck into which the seats themselves are build, non-elevated stands use the bench seats themselves to dual function as stairs. The bottom row bench seats are in direct contact with the ground. Each standard bench measures one foot plank in length separated from the row above it by a 6” vertical rise. In larger bleacher configurations, however, bench widths can be increased to a double foot plank width with the same vertical rise. This allows for a smoother, more comfortable ascent to the top rows without the need for separate aisles between seating sections.
While the basic configuration of non-elevated sports bleachers is simple enough, facilities do have to invest time in research and planning before placing an order. Any league or municipality looking to install new sports seating areas needs to decide, up front, if they are going to install fixed or portable bleachers in spectator areas. Fixed bleachers will probably be more heavily regulated by a variety of building codes in that particular area. In addition to ADA requirements that will no doubt apply, additional codes such as IBC, UBC, BOCA, SBC, and NFPA will no doubt apply, to some extent, to each installation.
To the greatest extent possible, XPB Locker will assist facility managers in designing non-elevated stand areas in full compliance with all applicable regulatory codes in a particular area. We have assisted a number of municipal and educational facilities cost-effectively meet the needs of local audiences in a variety of smaller, regional athletic centers in various parts of the country.
While regulations due tend to vary widely throughout the country, and multiple codes often have to be strictly followed, non-elevated sports bleachers are still the most cost effective and simple solution for the smaller school, city league, and summer camp athletic facility. With options that include both portability and fixed stability, widely varied crowds who attend a variety of seasonal sporting events can be accommodated safely, comfortably, and affordably by even the smallest organization on a fixed budget.
